HUPX price heatmap and BESS arbitrage

The intraday pattern of Hungarian power exchange (HUPX DAM) prices determines the arbitrage potential of industrial battery storage. Select the charging and discharging hours — the tool calculates the annual savings.

A year with battery storage

A 1 MW / 2 MWh industrial battery on HUPX over the last 12 months: every day it charges in the cheapest hours and discharges in the most expensive ones — this is how the gain adds up month by month.

State of charge

Charging 12–14 h (avg. 157.0 EUR/MWh): −251 EUR · Discharging 18–20 h (avg. 317.9 EUR/MWh): +448 EUR · day: +196 EUR

Assumptions as in the calculator below: 1,000 kW AC, 2,000 kWh DC, state of charge 10–90% (1,600 kWh usable), 88% efficiency, one cycle every day in the 2 cheapest and 2 most expensive hours of the month (on the month’s hourly average prices). Monthly result = daily result × days in the month; 365 cycles × 1.6 MWh × 88% ≈ 514 MWh discharged. The calculator’s "Automatic optimisation" button picks the same hours for the whole year, so it may show less. * Month in progress, using the average prices of the days so far. Excluding fees, taxes and degradation — a real quarter-hourly schedule will differ.

Estimate: this is a simplified model based on an average day per month and one cycle per day, using DAM average prices. Actual arbitrage comes from daily price swings — our simulation engine works with 35,040 quarter-hour intervals and dynamic programming (DP). Context

What does the heatmap show?

Blue cells mark the cheap hours (typically midday, when solar depresses prices), red cells the expensive peak hours. The battery storage charges in the cheap hours and discharges in the expensive ones — the price difference between the two (the spread) is the source of the arbitrage savings.

Seasonality is clearly visible on the heatmap: in the summer months the midday price dip is deeper (more solar in the system), which increases the arbitrage potential. In the winter months the average price is higher, but the spread is smaller.

Relevant for spot-price customers

HUPX arbitrage is only available to industrial customers with a spot (market-indexed) electricity contract. A fixed-price contract has no intraday spread.

Our real simulation is more accurate

This heatmap works with monthly averages. Our simulation engine calculates at 15-minute resolution, with the customer’s actual price data and consumption profile.
