Spread (price difference)
The difference between the highest and lowest electricity price within a day; the source of battery storage arbitrage profit.
The spread is the difference between the price of the most expensive and the cheapest hour within a day. The larger it is, the more valuable battery storage arbitrage becomes: charge cheaply, discharge expensively.
In June 2026, the average daily HUPX spread grew to 331 EUR/MWh (13:00: 34 EUR/MWh vs 20:00: 293 EUR/MWh) — the highest value in our data series so far. Growing solar penetration causes ever deeper midday troughs, which widens the spread.
Important: the net spread is the value corrected for RTE — the charging price must be divided by the round-trip efficiency. Interactive spread data: HUPX prices.
